Project Insanity is a good base to use for beginners, Although other people would recommend Apollo or some other base. Just search around and revise Java to learn about it and make your own programes which most people do around here now.

Apollo is obviously going to be the recommended base but I personally hate the packaging on it (same as Hyperion) I'd start out with a cleaned Project Insanity and go from there.
